This is one of the most challenging issues in Sandlot. Most municipalities require insurance for the use of their fields, but regardless, insurance is a great thing to have to protect everyone, especially team leadership, from unexpected liability. The good folks from the Austin sandlot community shared this contact with me. Val Rogers, of the company Sports Insurance val@sportsinsurance.com., and I discussed Sandlot Revolution getting an umbrella policy which would allow us to add teams as needed but that isn't possible with the current structure of the Sandlot community. She also said that every situation is different but the simplest way is if each team gets their own insurance policy. A policy is roughly $520 annually (always subject to change!) and can cover up to approximately 45 people. This is how Austin Sandlot currently uses the Sports insurance services. They are based in Lake Placid, NY but can insure in most states without a problem. I am happy to discuss this further with anyone who wants to or check out the site and reach out to Val. VIVA LA REVOLUTION! https://www.sportsinsurance.com/
Unfortunately, there is not a completely straightforward way to join a team since, nothing is formally centralized, but that's why I started Sandlot Revolution! So welcome to the Sandlot Revolution!
Although it can differ between independent teams and leagues, the best way I have found to join a team is to follow Sandlot Revolution on Instagram and find a couple of teams you like the vibe of, you can find the teams from your area on the sandlotrevolution.com site under the Teams or Team by Region tabs. Once you've done that you should go to at least one of their practices or games and introduce yourself. They can tell you whether they need anyone, (sometimes they need someone to sub in immediately so always take a glove!) or if they are looking. They're aren't many tryouts that I know of so hanging around and getting to know people is really the best way to join a team. It is also critical to finding the team you like. This isn't just baseball, you are joining a community!
The other way to get involved is to get a buddy and start having a regular toss. Many teams have started this way, two people throwing the ball around and inevitably more people want to get involved and join. I've seen teams start this way in less than a month. If you have access to a larger community then you could have a cookout or something to get a group together and tell them what you want to do. Having your own team is a blast and allows you to be creative with team name, uniforms, etc.
That's the best I can tell you! Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions!
There are only three rules: 1) Baseballs, 2) Wood Bats, and 3) Don't be a dick.
If you're cool with those we would love to have you!
